My husband’s sperm count was very low. We felt hopeless. Dr. Parinaaz explained that with ICSI, they only need one good sperm per egg — and she included it at no extra cost. Our son was born healthy, and the whole experience was handled with such sensitivity and discretion.

Understanding ICSI — When Precision Makes the Difference

If your doctor has recommended ICSI, or if you have been told that male factor infertility might be affecting your chances — you are probably wondering what this technique actually involves and whether it can help your specific situation.

ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) changes the equation entirely. Our embryologist selects a single, healthy sperm and injects it directly into each mature egg using a microscopic needle. This bypasses every barrier — low count, poor motility, abnormal shape, even antibodies that attack sperm. ICSI achieves fertilisation rates of 85-90% — even in cases where conventional IVF would likely fail.

About Dr. Parinaaz Parhar

Dr. Parinaaz Parhar offers ICSI treatment in Hyderabad at Oasis Fertility Secunderabad. ICSI is included at no additional cost when clinically indicated. She holds an MBBS (Gold Medal), MS in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, DNB, and FNB in Reproductive Medicine — awarded to only 7-10 doctors annually across India. With 16+ years experience and 7,000+ couples helped, she specialises in male factor infertility, surgical sperm retrieval (TESA/PESA/micro-TESE), and complex cases.

Conventional IVF vs ICSI

  • Conventional IVF: Thousands of sperm placed around each egg — must penetrate on their own. Works when sperm quality is good.
  • ICSI: ONE carefully selected sperm injected directly into each mature egg
  • ICSI: Bypasses all barriers — low count, poor motility, abnormal shape, antibodies
  • ICSI: Works even with severe male factor and surgically retrieved sperm

Is ICSI Right for Your Situation?

ICSI is not needed for every IVF cycle. Dr. Parinaaz recommends it only when it genuinely improves your chances — not as a routine upsell. 1 in 3 infertility cases involve male factors — this is extremely common and highly treatable.

What Happens During ICSI — Step by Step

ICSI is performed in our embryology laboratory on the same day as egg retrieval. Here is exactly what happens — no surprises.

  • Step 1: Egg Retrieval (15-20 min) — Retrieved under light sedation. Identical to conventional IVF. Most patients are surprised how quick and comfortable it is.
  • Step 2: Egg Preparation (1-2 hrs) — Surrounding cells gently removed to assess maturity. Only mature eggs (MII stage) are suitable for ICSI. We let you know how many mature eggs you have.
  • Step 3: Sperm Selection — Fresh sample provided, or frozen/donor sperm thawed. Our embryologist selects the healthiest, most motile sperm at high magnification. Advanced techniques (MACS, IMSI at 6000x) used when indicated.
  • Step 4: The Injection — Each egg held steady with a specialised pipette. A single sperm drawn into an ultra-fine needle and deposited directly into the egg. Performed entirely under microscope — you feel nothing.
  • Step 5: Fertilisation Check (next morning, 16-18 hrs later) — Injected eggs placed in incubator overnight. We check for two pronuclei confirming fertilisation. Expected rate: 85-90%. We call you with the result.
  • Step 6: Embryo Development and Transfer (Day 3-5) — Embryos monitored daily. Best quality embryo(s) selected for transfer or freezing. From this point, identical to conventional IVF.

Every aspect of your treatment — including the male partner’s evaluation and sperm analysis — is handled with complete confidentiality and discretion.

What Makes ICSI Different with Dr. Parinaaz

ICSI Cost — The Surprise Most Patients Don’t Expect

At most clinics, ICSI costs Rs 30,000-50,000 extra on top of IVF. At our clinic, it is included at no additional charge.

  • ICSI with IVF: INCLUDED — No Extra Charge. When clinically indicated, it is part of your IVF treatment cost. No surprise bills, no add-on fees.
  • Basic IVF + ICSI: Rs 1,00,000 – 1,50,000
  • IVF + ICSI with Medications: Rs 1,50,000 – 2,50,000
  • Complete IVF + ICSI Package: Rs 2,50,000 – 3,50,000
  • PGT-A Genetic Testing: Rs 20,000 – 40,000 per embryo (additional, when required)

“I include ICSI at no extra charge because I believe in prescribing what is necessary without inflating bills. Your treatment decisions should be based on what is best for your outcome — not what is best for the clinic’s revenue.” — Dr. Parinaaz

Is ICSI Safe? Honest Answers to Your Concerns

It is completely natural to worry about a procedure that involves injecting sperm directly into an egg. Here is what 30+ years of evidence shows.

“Will my baby be normal?”

ICSI has been performed since 1992 — over 30 years worldwide. Millions of healthy ICSI babies have been born globally. Studies consistently show that ICSI children develop normally. The first ICSI babies are now adults in their 30s, many with their own naturally conceived children.

“Does ICSI increase birth defect risk?”

Research shows ICSI itself does not increase birth defect rates. Any slightly elevated risk observed in IVF/ICSI pregnancies is likely related to the underlying infertility causes, not the procedure. PGT-A (genetic testing) can provide additional reassurance if desired.

“Will my son inherit his father’s infertility?”

Some genetic causes of male infertility can be inherited — particularly Y-chromosome microdeletions or certain genetic conditions. If there is a genetic component, Dr. Parinaaz will discuss genetic counselling and PGT options. Being informed helps you make the best decisions for your family.

“Is the injection damaging to the egg?”

The ICSI needle is extraordinarily thin — much finer than a human hair. In the hands of experienced embryologists, egg damage rates are very low (typically under 5% of mature eggs). The 85-90% fertilisation rate speaks to the safety and precision of the technique.

“I always tell my patients: if ICSI weren’t safe, we wouldn’t have 30 years of data and millions of healthy children proving it. But I also believe in being honest — I will answer every question you have, including the ones you are afraid to ask.” — Dr. Parinaaz

Questions About ICSI We Hear Every Day

With Dr. Parinaaz, ICSI is included at no additional charge when clinically indicated — unlike many clinics that charge Rs 30,000-50,000 extra. Your complete IVF+ICSI package ranges from Rs 1.5-3.5 lakhs depending on your protocol. You will receive a detailed cost estimate during consultation with no hidden charges.

ICSI is not “better” — it is a different fertilisation technique. For male factor infertility, previous fertilisation failure, or genetic testing, ICSI is essential and dramatically improves outcomes. For couples without these factors, conventional IVF may work equally well. Dr. Parinaaz recommends ICSI only when it genuinely benefits your case — not as a routine add-on.

ICSI itself happens entirely in the laboratory — you are not present for the injection. There is zero pain from ICSI. The egg retrieval (which is the same for IVF and ICSI) is done under light sedation, so you will not feel anything. Providing a sperm sample is done privately and comfortably.

No fertility treatment can guarantee results. However, ICSI achieves fertilisation rates of 85-90% of mature eggs — significantly higher than leaving fertilisation to chance. In rare cases (under 5%), fertilisation may not occur despite ICSI, which may indicate egg quality issues that require further investigation.

Yes, in most cases. When there is no sperm in the ejaculate, sperm can often be retrieved directly from the testes using TESA, PESA, or micro-TESE procedures. ICSI is then used to fertilise eggs with this surgically retrieved sperm. Success rates with this combined approach are excellent.

Yes. Over 30 years of data and millions of ICSI babies worldwide show that children conceived through ICSI develop normally. The first ICSI babies (born 1992) are now adults in their 30s, many with their own children. Studies consistently show no significant differences in physical, mental, or emotional development.

Several reasons: (1) Genetic testing (PGT) requires ICSI to prevent DNA contamination. (2) Using frozen eggs — ICSI improves fertilisation rates. (3) Previous IVF had unexplained poor fertilisation. (4) Suspected sperm function issues not visible on standard analysis — sperm may look normal but cannot penetrate the egg. Dr. Parinaaz always explains her reasoning.

IVF is the overall process (stimulation, egg retrieval, lab fertilisation, embryo transfer). ICSI is the fertilisation method within IVF. In conventional IVF, sperm and eggs are placed together in a dish. In ICSI, a single sperm is injected directly into each egg. Think of ICSI as a precision upgrade to the fertilisation step of IVF.

Some couples prefer ICSI for the reassurance of knowing every egg had the best chance at fertilisation. Dr. Parinaaz will discuss this with you — if you prefer ICSI even without a strict medical indication, it is included at no extra charge. Your comfort and confidence matter.

Absolutely. A diagnosis involving sperm quality can affect both partners emotionally — particularly the male partner, who may feel a sense of responsibility or inadequacy. These feelings are completely normal and very common. Dr. Parinaaz handles every aspect of male factor evaluation with sensitivity and complete discretion. 1 in 3 infertility cases involve male factors — you are far from alone.
